Two Locals Brewing Company has officially marked one year in their home at 3675 Market St, bringing craft beer, culture, and community together in West Philadelphia. Founded by brothers Richard and Mengistu Koilor, Two Locals stands as Philadelphia’s first Black-owned brewery, an achievement that continues to shape the city’s craft beer scene.
The journey of Two Locals began in 2016 with a one-gallon homebrew kit. What started as a passion project quickly transformed into a mission to create high-quality craft beer while increasing Black representation in the brewing industry. After years of pop-ups and collaborations, Two Locals found its home in uCity Square, where it has become a hub for both beer lovers and artists alike.
When asked about what inspires Two Locals, Rich mentions, "Our love for beer, being interested in art, liking science, having an artistic side - all of this inspired us. Other than that, we didn't see enough Black brewers or Black-owned breweries in our city, or our state, so why not us?"
A Space for More Than Just Beer
Two Locals is a brewery that creates a welcoming space for the community. They've expanded their offerings to include wine, cocktails, and mocktails, ensuring an inclusive experience for all visitors. More than that, the brewery has become a vital space for artists and creatives in Philadelphia.

The community at Two Locals has evolved into more than just beer drinkers. "We created a space that's getting more support from our own people, and supporting the arts," says Rich. “Whether it's spoken word, live music, or comedy, we’re here to support the arts.”
This commitment to culture is evident in their packed event calendar. From Two Locals Comedy and Outta Pocket Comedy Show, to monthly Open Mics including Forbidden Fruit’s Off the Vine series and Power Street Theatre's Souletri Sundays, Two Locals has become a go-to destination for creative expression.
Cultural Impact and Looking Ahead
Despite their success, Rich remains humble when asked about their impact on the beer industry. "We're still trying to make an impact, I would say. Still growing, still perfecting our craft and trying to perfect the presentation and all of the events that we do," he shares. However, the brewery’s presence alone has begun to shift the landscape, opening doors for more diversity in the industry and proving that Black Brewers can thrive in a historically underrepresented space.
As they move into their second year, Two Locals aims to expand their distribution footprint beyond Philadelphia, reaching communities in Delaware and New Jersey. But at the heart of their vision is a continued dedication to supporting the arts and fostering community.
"We want to keep growing our community, as far as supporting the arts and embracing our belief that supporting the arts is the way to go," emphasizes Rich.
