Caitlin describes Eros as a meditation on love, passion, and the profound creative energy they inspire. Rooted in the mythology of the Greek God Eros, initially depicted as androgynous and later reimagined as a masculine figure or Cupid, the film examines how this potent force manifests in our lives. “Eros is the essence of love and passion,” she explains, “and that passion can look frantic and unruly, peaceful and eloquent, or like excitement and inspiration. It always involves a creative aspect.”

The film, Eros: Fragile as it is Free, explores these ideas in the context of the postpartum experience, a time when emotions are heightened and the boundaries between beauty, confusion, and profound clarity blur. “It’s about depicting the different expressions of our relationship to Eros,” Caitlin shares. “The support you’re surrounded with really determines how gracefully or frantically you carry that load.”

About Eros: A Film of Unfiltered Truth

Eros: Fragile as it is Free is an experimental dance film that layers animation, poetry, and dance to depict the postpartum journey’s emotional extremes. It questions societal norms such as the nuclear family and challenges urges toward individualism, instead highlighting the collective experience of love, support, and vulnerability.

The work prioritizes Black women, femmes, and queer creatives of color, putting their voices at the forefront of its process. Caitlin also aims to resonate with parents, caregivers, and anyone who struggles with the effects of capitalism and misogyny. The film’s universal themes of navigating love, loss, and liberation make it a poignant and necessary conversation starter.

In an ideal world, Caitlin envisions Eros as a force that encourages growth, harmony, and creativity. She notes how Eros often becomes feared, manipulated, or misunderstood, leading to imbalance. “Eros is powerful, and power can be intimidating,” she reflects. “But if humans could surrender to it, rather than trying to control it, we might experience a deeper presence and connection to ourselves and each other.”

Through her dance and storytelling, Caitlin seeks to embody this surrender, channeling her passion as a language of expression and exploration. Her movement invites viewers to feel Eros in its raw, unfiltered beauty.

Supporting Eros

The fundraiser highlighted the importance of community in bringing Eros to life. Donations directly support the film’s post-production costs, including hiring local musicians for original scoring and compensating the production team. The current phase of the project, which has already birthed a powerful scene titled “FURY,” aims to raise $5,000 as part of its overall $75,000 goal.
